Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Testing

This test is non-invasive, safe, painless, and accurately measures your bones’ density.

Why Might I Need A Bone Mineral Density:

BMD testing measures bone loss (low bone density) due to osteoporosis. It helps the patient and physician decide the risk of future fractures, determine the need for medical treatment, and monitor the success of existing treatment.

Midland-Ellesmere X-ray and Ultrasound is an accredited site with the Ontario Association of Radiologists, Canadian Bone Mineral Densitometry (CBMD) program.

CBMD clinics are recognized as the “Gold Standard” of BMD Accreditation for Ontario hospitals and clinics providing BMD services to Ontario patients at risk of the debilitating effects of bone loss and osteoporosis. Accreditation signifies to the public that the facility’s BMD equipment, BMD technologists and the services they provide, and the physicians reporting DXA scan results have met the rigorous standards set by the CBMD Program.

Scheduling Your Test:

  • Please contact our office at your convenience to schedule an appointment at the location most suitable for you. We look forward to assisting you further.
  • Individuals and referring physicians must advise our staff of the date of any previous BMD test so that the facility can verify that the planned test is insured.

Before Your Test:

  • Do not wear any metal in or on clothing (e.g., zippers, underwire).
  • Do not take calcium supplements for at least 48 hours before your test.
  • Please bring a list of your current medications and supplements, along with DOSAGES, to your appointment. This should include vitamins and calcium.

During Your Test:

During the bone density scan, you may be asked to wear a gown for the procedure. The scan typically concentrates on the hip and lower spine regions because osteoporosis frequently affects these areas. You will lie on your back on a scanning table while a low-dose X-ray machine captures images of these regions.

After The Test:

After completing the test, you can resume your regular activities without any restrictions. If you have any questions or concerns following the test, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
