Patient Ultrasound Instructions

These instructions are very important. Patients who are not properly prepared may be asked to reschedule their appointment.

ABDOMEN (INCLUDING STUDIES OF THE RENAL ARTERIES, GALL BLADDER, PANCREAS, SPLEEN, LIVER, KIDNEYS AND AORTA)
  • Avoid fatty meals the night before the exam.
  • No solid foods 8 hours before the exam.
  • Small quantities of clear fluids are permitted.
  • Any medication should be taken as required.
PELVIC ONLY (INCLUDES TRANSVAGINAL, OVARIES, BLADDER): FEMALE AND MALE
  • One hour before the exam, drink 4 cups of water (total 32 oz).
  • Do NOT empty the bladder.
TRANSRECTAL
  • Purchase a fleet enema (from a pharmacy). Follow the instructions on the package.
  • The night before your appointment administer the rectal fleet enema.
  • One hour before the exam, drink 4 cups of water (total 32 oz).
  • DO NOT VOID – A full bladder is necessary for the examination.
PROSTATE
  • Drink 4 cups of water (total 32 oz) of water 1 hour before your exam.
  • DO NOT VOID – A full bladder is necessary for the examination.
ABDOMEN AND PELVIC (SAME VISIT)
  • Avoid solid foods and fatty meals 8 hours before the exam.
  • Small quantities of clear fluids are permitted.
  • One hour prior to the exam drink 4 cups of water (total 32 oz).
  • DO NOT VOID – A full bladder is necessary for the examination.
PREGNANCY
  • One hour before the exam, drink the required amount of water. DO NOT VOID – A full bladder is necessary for the examination.
    • under 12 weeks 4 cups (32 oz)
    • 12-24 weeks 3 cups (24 oz)
    • over 24 weeks 2 cups (16 oz)
  • Obstetric 3rd Trimester / Fetal Growth Follow-Up and Biophysical Profile Patients are advised to consume a sugary treat (such as candy, fruit juice, or chocolate) 15 minutes before your appointment.
ARTERIAL LEG DOPPLER
  • Fluids are permitted.
SCROTUM / THYROID & NECK / MUSCULOSKELETAL (MSK), VASCULAR ULTRASOUND
  • No preparation is required.

X-Ray Guidelines (Please let us know before your exam begins if you may be pregnant).

MAMMOGRAM
  • No deodorant, antiperspirant, or powder under your arms or on the chest.
  • Please wear a 2-piece outfit.
BONE DENSITOMETRY
  • Do not wear any metal in or on clothing (e.g. zippers, underwire).
  • Do not take calcium supplements at least 24 hours before your test.
  • Bring a list of supplements/medications with you.
GENERAL X-RAY
  • No preparation is required.
